Mary Riepma Ross gets $7.7M endowment

History in the Making for the Ross!
The Friends of the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center are overjoyed by the announcement of a $7.7M endowment, given to the University of Nebraska Foundation by the late Mary Riepma Ross to benefit the movie theater bearing her name. This announcement marks one of the most significant days in the history of cinema on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus.

This historical timeline began in 1964, when Norman Geske was determined to recognize cinema as a major component of 20^th century art and included a theater in the Sheldon Art Museum. Another highlight arrived in 1973, when Norman hired Danny Lee Ladely to direct the movie program at the Sheldon. Danny quickly brought national attention to the Sheldon’s movie offerings and has continued to bring innovative independent movies to Lincoln, Nebraska for the past 40 years.

In 1990, thanks to the collaboration of Norman, Danny and Lucy Buntain Comine (who represents the Hixson Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts for the University of Nebraska Foundation), Mary Riepma Ross awarded the University of Nebraska Foundation an endowment of $3.5M to build a state-of-the-art, stand-alone movie theater. Construction of the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center was completed in January of 2003, and the facility is now entering its second decade of service.

Mrs. Ross’ most recent gift will allow the theater to provide thoughtful programming for art lovers and visitors to the Lincoln community—for decades to come.

On behalf of the The Friends of The Ross Board of Directors—and over 800 members of the Friends of the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, both past and present—congratulations to the Ross family, Norman Geske, Danny Lee Ladely, Lucy Buntain Comine, and the University of Nebraska Foundation. Thanks to their collective vision, stewardship and partnerships, The Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center will have an enduring legacy.
